Juggling Finances: Progress in Your 40s, 50s & 60s

Life is busy, money is complicated, and let’s be real, the juggle between what you want now and what you’ll need later never truly stops. The good news? With the right habits and strategies, you can find balance at every stage of life and even pass those habits on to your children and grandchildren, giving them the best possible start.

Your 40s: Build the Foundation

For many, your 40s are peak juggling years: careers, mortgages, raising kids, and still trying to find time for yourself. This is when financial literacy and structure become game changers.

  • Get serious about debt: Tackle high-interest loans and credit cards first, as they drain resources that could be building your future. Consider consolidating debts or refinancing your mortgage to free up cash flow and reduce stress.
  • Grow your super: Boosting contributions in your 40s can have a huge impact because compounding still has 20+ years to work in your favour. Even an extra $50–100 a week can make a big difference to your retirement nest egg.
  • Teach your kids: Show them real-life money management, how you budget, how you save, and even the mistakes you’ve learned from. Teaching kids about money early gives them confidence and a head start in life.

Your 50s: Refine and Reset

By your 50s, priorities often shift. Kids may be moving towards independence, and your focus starts turning to retirement.

  • Refine your strategy: Take stock of where you are financially. Are your investments still aligned with your risk tolerance and goals? This is the decade to make sure your strategy is working for you, not against you.
  • Top up your super: With kids possibly off your hands, you may have more disposable income. Use this time to maximise concessional and non-concessional contributions. Catch-up concessional contributions can also help if you haven’t always been able to put in the maximum.
  • Focus on progress, not perfection: Progress is about small, consistent steps forward. Don’t worry if you haven’t done everything perfectly; what matters is that you’re taking action now. Set realistic short-term goals to keep motivation high.

Your 60s: Protect and Prepare

As you edge closer to retirement, the focus shifts to protecting what you’ve built and preparing for the next stage of life.

  • De-risk your portfolio: While growth is still important, reducing exposure to volatility helps safeguard your capital. This is about balance—enough growth to beat inflation, enough stability to give you peace of mind.
  • Plan your income streams: Map out how super, investments, and other income sources will support your lifestyle. Will you draw a pension from super? Do you need to structure withdrawals tax-effectively? Knowing how your income will flow gives you confidence as you head into retirement.
  • Legacy planning: Your 60s are a good time to think about how you want to pass on your wealth. Review your estate plan, update beneficiaries, and have open conversations with family. Encourage your kids and grandkids to start their own financial planning, so your legacy is about more than money – it’s about shared wisdom.

Passing It On

Financial well-being isn’t just about your own goals; it’s about helping the next generation thrive. Share the good habits you’ve built, talk openly about money, and encourage your family to seek advice early.

“The earlier we learn how to manage our money, the more choices and freedom we create for our future. At JBS, we see financial literacy not just as a skill, but as a gift that keeps on giving across generations.”
