Tax planning shouldn’t start in June

There is a familiar pattern we see every year.
As June approaches, inboxes fill, conversations shift, and suddenly tax is front of mind. Receipts are gathered, deductions are questioned, and decisions are made quickly. Sometimes too quickly.
But what if we have been thinking about it all wrong?
“Tax planning shouldn’t start in June. It starts in July for the year ahead.”
That simple shift in mindset can change everything.
At JBS, we often say that tax is not just about minimising what you pay. It is about being intentional with your financial decisions throughout the year. Because when the environment is constantly changing, reacting at the end is rarely enough.
A landscape that keeps moving
Right now, Australians are navigating a tax system that continues to evolve. Government policy changes, shifting budgets and economic pressures are influencing decisions year to year.
The data tells the same story. Australia’s total taxation revenue reached $839 billion in 2024 to 2025 and now represents more than 30 percent of GDP. That scale reflects just how significant tax is in the broader financial picture for individuals and families.
At the same time, sentiment towards tax changes is divided. Recent survey results show Australians are almost evenly split in their support or opposition to income tax reforms, highlighting uncertainty and mixed confidence in the system.
This uncertainty is exactly why a proactive approach matters.
“As the dynamics change, you need to be nimble and able to pivot.”
The difference a year can make
We recently worked with a client, Mark, who came to us in late May. He had always managed his tax himself and felt fairly confident.
But as we sat down together, it became clear that some decisions made earlier in the year had limited his options. Contributions to super had not been optimised, investments had been purchased without considering tax timing, and opportunities were missed.
There was still immense value in the advice we provided, but the real impact would have been felt if we had started that conversation in July of the same year.
Mark’s story is common. It is not about doing anything wrong. It is about not having the full picture early enough.
Planning creates confidence
Contrast that with another couple, Sarah and James.
They came to us at the beginning of the financial year, wanting clarity rather than last minute fixes. Together, we mapped out their income, upcoming bonuses, potential asset sales and super contributions.
Over the course of the year, we adjusted their strategy as things changed. When interest rates shifted, we revisited cash flow. When policy announcements were made, we recalibrated their approach.
By the time June arrived, there was no stress. Just confirmation that their strategy had worked.
That sense of control is powerful.
Research supports this too. Around 94 percent of clients who work with a financial adviser say they trust their adviser to act in their best interests, and nine out of ten believe the benefits of advice outweigh the costs. [faaa.au]
It is not just about outcomes. It is about confidence and peace of mind.
Reflecting on opportunity
There is also a broader question worth asking.
“As a generation, did we take for granted the opportunities that were in front of us?”
For many Australians, the past few decades have delivered strong growth, favourable tax settings and accessible wealth creation opportunities. But the environment is shifting, and future opportunities may look different.
This is why thoughtful, forward planning matters now more than ever.
The JBS perspective
At JBS Financial Strategists, tax planning is not a one-month exercise. It is an ongoing strategy that connects with your broader financial plan.
We look at how your investments, superannuation, income and lifestyle goals all interact. We anticipate change, rather than react to it. And we help clients stay flexible as the landscape evolves.
Because good tax outcomes are rarely created in a rush. They are built over time, with intention.
A gentle place to start
If June felt like a scramble, you are not alone.
Perhaps this year is an opportunity to do things differently. To start earlier. To feel more in control. To approach tax as part of your overall plan, not a last-minute task.
If you are curious about what that might look like for you, we are always here for a conversation.
